Why We All Should Fight

I just watched Why We Fight, documentary by Eugene Jarecki. It's a movie I've been jonesing to see since I heard about it. Why? I'm a sucker for political documentaries like women are suckers for rom-coms. I mean you know going in who the bad guy is going to be, you know pretty much what's going to happen. Look at something like SuperSize Me...why the hell was that so popular? The story would be if he ate that food and lost 15 pounds and grew a thicker head of hair and super strength. But people lined up anyways and we all know he would get fat and start dying...I mean, Mickey Dees is bad for you? No shit. What's next...cigarettes are bad? Car accidents cause injuries? Fire is hot? I expected the same thing with Why We Fight, and all other rom-coms. But this Why We Fight surprised me in a huge way just the same and made me feel like a helpless American.

One, you know going into Why We Fight, in this day and age and it's not a Frank Capra film fest, we're talking about Iraq, and it's not going to be about how they had so many WMD's aside from sand because we all know that sand, when it gets in your eye, hurts like a son-of-a-bitch, and when it gets in your vagina, causes considerable bitchiness. So, this movie was going to be about why we are in Iraq and why it was a bad, bad thing.

What this movie did though was not only show why it was bad, but show how the failure of American policy from Eisenhower on to dear ole W led to it. That was a nugget of truth I wasn't ready to deal with. Honestly, after the film, I felt a powerful need to move to New Zealand and scrub off any Red, White and Blue off me. It really just kicks you in the gut and shows you that yup, Iraw and war is a terrible thing, and you, the common unrich, unconnected person can do fuck-all about it because of reasons x, y and z.

With that said, yeah, it panders some cause you got your dead Iraqis and bleeding Iraqi children...civilians of course. And it may come off as a bit unfocused if you really don't invest your attention into it. And lastly, the biggest complaint, it's too easily ignorable because of it's partisianism. It's easy not to like Johnson because of Nam...but they implied Clinton also failed America in this military-industrial complex business...more on his dirty hands would be nice to strengthen the claims rather than simply piling more dirt onto W so we can see that everyone, not just those smarmy gigglefucks currently in the power. But, you know, maybe W is just the most guilty one of the bunch, who knows? The movie certainly makes it look like Bush is simply the culmination of the past 60 years of American failure...which is a wholly damning experience.

Watch this movie. It'll make a little vomit rise in your throat and makes you wonder how useful your vote and our democracy is in the face of all that whathaveyou. Oh, I gotta get my visa in order.

VIVA EL MUSTACHE.
