The Fear of Living Without Water

Friends,

My apartment is under construction of a sort. They are installing new counter tops and I believe a small dishwasher in each apartment. This sucks for a number of reasons. First, they're jacking up the rent. We already pay too much and a dishwasher isn't exactly a convenience. Second, I have no idea where they intend on putting a dishwasher. We use every square inch of cabinetry that we have, so this is going to put a space crunch on us. Third, this installation is going on throughout the week.

What that last one means is that throughout the day, at any time during the construction people's workday, I will be without water as they need to shut off the building's water to install the dishwashers. Now, as I am a grad student, and I spent quite a few hours in the home, this poses a bit of a problem for me, especially in terms of my bathroom usage. For this entire week, I will never know when will be the time that the toliet will not work or the shower will not work, which puts a cramp on my workout schedule and my water/tea/coffee drinking schedule.

As of today, I have yet to have a problem with the water. But what about in the next ten minutes? In twenty? What bathroom needs will I need to take care of in twenty minutes? Will I be able to?

You can understand the stress that I'm under here. So, you know, pray for me.

In other news, Emily had her interview with Denver University. It went well. We should hear from them around April 1 or thereabouts...which sucks. I wanted to hear earlier than that. They asked a strange question about working with diversity because, as Emily said, "Denver's a diverse place and they wanted to make sure people could work with a diverse population." Essentially, weeding out the racists. But I gotta wonder, how many racist librarians do you reckon there are? Also, how many racists do you suppose get tripped up on the "can you work with a diverse population" question? Like what flaming racist would be: "Diverse? Well, I work well with all ethnicities. Except Peruvians. They think they're so high and mighty with their doomsday calendar. 2012. Pthlb! I got their doomsday right here, pal."

Anyway, wish us luck.

Denver's great, and it is pretty diverse. Hope it works out.

Even in my absence, Denver rocks. I'll have lots of suggestions/advice if you move to my hometown.

As for the disruption at Chez Johnson, be strong. Be strong.
