Bad Music Sunday: The Comprehensive List

Friends,

Jorge asked to see a list of all the songs ever to be included on Bad Music Sunday, and I thought, yeah, good idea. I've been worrying over whether or not I've been duplicating songs on this list, so if I have a running list that I can check against, then that will make my life easier. And, I have duplicated songs, twice, on this: Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart and Third Eye Blind's Jumper. Doesn't make them worse than the other songs, just that I fell down on the job. (EDIT: It's actually 3 songs...Puddle of Mudd's Blurry was also on this list twice, I didn't even realize it until I read over the list just now)

So, here's the list, and let me ask you a question. If you were to boil down this list to the Top Five Bad Songs, as in the worst 5 songs I have given small tribute to here, what would they be...and also, give me a Top Five, if you can, of songs that should not be on here, songs wrongly tributed on Bad Music Sunday. You should have categories for the worst songs. Like the worst Country song, worst boy band song, worst song sung by a member of the Starship Enterprise....

Stays on: Leonary Nimoy and his Bilbo Baggins ballad.

Taken off: Nickelback's "This is How You Remind Me." It brings back fond memories of getting my first speeding ticket.

Shouldn't Be On the List:

Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself [instant HS memories, funny double entendre]
George Harrison – I’ve Got My Mind Set On You [he died to young; give him a break]
Joe Jackson – Stepping Out [decent song from a great album]
Natalie Merchant – Carnival [I just like her]
Oingo Boingo – Little Girls [consider the spirit of the band/song]
Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al [so-so song from a great album-- it's not his fault the song was overplayed on radio/MTV]
Roxy Music – More than This [I dig it; and B Ferry is so suave, he might help you get laid]
Scandal – Goodbye to You [saw 'em live the year this came out. Patty Smythe was hot back then and it's a catchy little number]
Simon & Garfunkel – Scarborough Fair [historical pass--and by "historical" I mean the melody & lyrics of the song go back about 350 years]
Steve Goodman – Go Cubs Go [see G. Harrison comment--and I'm a White Sox fan, fer chrissakes!]
Thompson Twins – Hold Me Now [strong HS memories, evokes young drunken petting memories]
William Shatner – Rocket Man [a classic]

Should Be On The List:

All of the rest [how can I narrow down that pile of dung?]

Oh man, I was just reading Tom's list and I didn't realize some of those songs were on there. I agree with him as well as my list. And I agree with Mitch about categories.
This is your new job, Bryan.

You know, sometimes I come to your blog because I want to hear some good music. I just look through your Bad Music Sunday posts and find just what I need.

BMS has saved my soul more than a few times.

Wow. Ok... let's see.

Five worst:
1. Steely Dan – Rikki Don't Lose that Number (fuck anything Steely Dan did, I hate those bastards). I hope they burn in a fire.

2. Starship – We Built this City... this really goes without saying.

3. Tears for Fears – Sowing the Seeds of Love... they're so much better than this, that this song sickens me.

4. The Cars – Drive... the same goes for this song. "Best Friend's Girlfriend," "Just what I needed," and "Drive"? God, it's fucking awful.

5. The Cure – Friday, I'm in Love... and this song. How do you go from "Killing an Arab," "Jumping somebody else's train," "Love Cats," etc, to this? Robert Smith really should be ashamed of himself. Perhaps if he had changed his 'do and wiped off the make-up I could accept it as a "departure from earlier work..."

Five that shouldn't be on list:
1. Cutting Crew – (I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight... this is a classic 80s song. I love it.

2. Eddie Money – Shakin'... really? Man, Eddie Money seriously is underappreciated. "Her tits were shakin' 'til the middle of the night, Snappin' her fingers..." Come on! That's a great song.

3. Hall & Oates – Out of Touch... Hall & Oats, while mocked by many, were really VERY funky ass white men. Listening to them now, I really enjoy them. If you can bring yourself to ignore the vocals (most of the time), the beats and music are dope.

4. The Divinyls – I Touch Myself... masturbation songs should never be deemed "bad music"--there's so few of them.

5. Toto – Africa... again, classic 80s.
