Bronson's Book

Friends,

For those of you who are unfamiliar, a fellow MNSU MFA'er, who I shared an office with {squeal} was included in a collection of essays released last year called 20 Something Essays By 20 Something Writers. His name is Bronson Lemer, an he wrote an essay called the "The Mustache Race." It has something to do with Iraq, which he served in, blah blah blah, but goddamn mustache! Manliness! Holy hot damn. It's quite an honor for him to be included.

Anyways, I just finished reading that book, and like all collection's it is hit and miss. I caught myself skipping/skimming through a few essays, like the one about the bombing in New Dehli. Sure, that was probably real emotional and what have you, but in this same collection there is an essay about how "fucking awesome" it is to be a 20-something year old. So excuse my not wanting to sit through something emotionally gripping. There was also a 25,000 dollar prize associated with the best 20Something essay, and that one is interesting, and I can see how it won, and there were plenty of other worthy essays in the collection that could have won too (including Bronson's). But, fuck all those other essays, Bronson's brings the mustache and brings it well. His may be a tale of mustache inability, but its still pretty good, and better than that awesome guy....jeez, how did that even get in there...it was like a MySpace blog, and that other ain't-I-clever one with the interviews and shit. God.

It makes for a quick read, and like I said, not all of them are high art, or even quality low-brow art for that matter (that awesome guy springs to mind), but it's worth picking up, especially if you need a quality bathroom book and tired of getting newsprint on your fingers. And we got to support the MSU brethern, because if Bronson can't make it in the writing biz, then I'm fucked.

Next on my non-required bathroom book reading list: World War Z by Max Brooks.

Viva el mustache!
