Friends,
I watched the movie King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters today over breakfast and coffee, and that, my friends, is one fine damn documentary.
Yes, it covers competitive video game playing, specifically one man trying to become the best Donkey Kong player in the world, and the champion the challenger is trying to unseat. There are heroes, there are villains, there are times you will cheer, and times you might cry. Seriously, this morning, alone on my couch, there was a part in this movie where cheered out loud for the protagonist in this documentary. While the documentary preview, which is embedded below, seems to play up the ridiculous/comedy of the documentary (which there is some) but it's not the main thrust of the movie because it has an honest heart and doesn't just want you to laugh at the goofs, like in American Movie.
So, check out this movie. It's out to rent and buy now. Oh, and if you do rent/buy it make sure you check out the "The Saga Continues" special feature on the DVD for some updates on the story.
Now, sitting on my floor, is a DVD copy of the documentary Darkon, which covers the world of live action role playing. I haven't seen it yet, but I hope it is as good as The King of Kong and has that same heart where the goofballs are treated honestly and not just props for jokes. I'll report back later when I get to watch that one.
Here's the Darkon trailer:
