Friends,
I know a lot of you watch ESPN, so I know you've seen this story about Eric Byrnes creditting his mustache for a 14 game hitting streak. That seems pretty reasonable to me. Nothing manlier than a streak, and as Crash Davis said, never fuck with a winning streak. Makes perfect sense to me that he'd want a mustache for that.
The Eric "Stacheback" Byrnes did overstep his boundaries a little by declaring 2008 year of the Mustache. First, he needs to be more precise in making those kind of declarations. As you all know, last year was Year of the Mustache - Film (Modern Era) for all the mustachioed goodness in movie-films. So, if this is truly the Year of the Mustache, all encompassing, then we'll need more evidence from mustache worldwide, otherwise it's Year of the Mustache - NL West (Wild Card Era).
Of course, I like this. With Stacheback on their team, I think it cinches that Diamondbacks to get to the NL Championship as I prognosticated, but the rest of my picks are really stinking it up. Tigers as the World Series champs is looking bleak, and as long as Andruw "My Back Leg Collapses With Every Swing I Take Because I Weigh 75 Pounds More Than Kirby Puckett" Jones can't hit, my Dodgers winning it all pick is looking mighty unlikely. But, I tell you, if the Diamondbacks win it all, on the facelocks of Eric Byrnes, and other Stachebacks who would probably follow along...that would a-okay by me.
Plus, take a look at Eric Byrnes here...and the stupid "D-Backs" thing written on the front of the Diamondbacks jersey:

Has there ever been a face that needs a mustache more? And, sandals with socks? Hawaiian shorts? That haircut? Man, that jersey might as well say "D-bags" (for douchebags) on the front of it. But with a mustache...and without that sandal+sock combo...now there's a mighty ballplayer.
viva el mustache
ps...additional question...byrnes is considered an "old school" player meaning he tries real hard all the time...I was wondering when will the "old school" designation start to mean people like Rickey Henderson and other me-firsters, and "old school" as we apply it begins to mean something else?
