I Want to See Mountains, Gandalf

Friends,

Last night, around 7:30 PM CST, Emily received word that she has been ACCEPTED by Denver University's Library Science Program!

Yes, I mean that exclamation mark. So, does this mean that I'm moving to Denver? Good chance of it. Diana, Jaws, anything you could tell me about that city would be nice. And Tom, looks like I'm going to need that "Flynn's Guide to Denver" And, does this mean I'm going to be hearing this a lot:

Just to run down what's going on with Emily's schools so far.

Those who said yes:
Denver University

Those who said no:
University of Michigan (who are now known as the Assholeverines)

Those who haven't said peep:
Simmons College
Univeristy of Wisconsin
University of South Carolina
University of North Carolina
Lousiana State University
University of Southern Mississippi

Simmons may not say anything until mid-May believe it or not...they said it takes 8 weeks to plow through their applications, so they must get a ton of people for that process because Natalie got into their Children's Lit program in what, over a weekend or something. I guess their high demand has something to do with their internships with the Library of Congress and the United Nations. But no one else has said anything at all.

I'm a little pissed at the Mississippi one because they want an interview to be part of the admission process and they haven't even contacted Emily yet to schedule one, the magnolia-eaters, so either they're going to get things rolling really late, or they just don't have their shit together, or maybe still, they're the type of place who think silence is an adequate rejection, or, finally, the interview is just a formality and not done until right before acceptance.

And what's kind of funny is that I've gotten two letters from North Carolina about a job I applied to there, which I was woefully underqualified for (the job was to run North Carolina's literary festival...and one of the letters was a rejection letter) and Emily hasn't heard one thing from those tarheels.

Oh, and before I get out of here, once the Tom Wolfe vs. MFA post gets buried, and if the discussion is stil lively, I'll create a link over with the "Writing" links so you don't have to keep scrolling through posts to find it.

viva el denver university!!!!!!

I lived in Cheyenne, WY for three years, which means I spent quite a bit of time in Denver...

There's a Chinese restaurant in the north Denver suburb Thornton that sells Chinese food at $1.00 per item called, I kid you not, "$1.00 Chinese Food." Food alternates from amazing ("Wow, I can't believe that was only a dollar!") to awful ("Wow, at least it was only a dollar!"). I should add the building has a southwest facade and was clearly a Taco Bell/John's at some point.

The Bovine Metropolis comedy improv theater is worth your time. Maybe take a class, man. Say 'hi' to Carl for me.

Nearby Fort Collins is probably the coolest college town ever. Boulder, however, is too progressive even for me and my heart bleeds liberal all day long.

As I recall, you and I wore the same pair of Vans shoes for a while. I picked mine up for dirt-cheap at the outlet malls in Castle Rock.

Downtown Denver doesn't have a north-south-east-west grid. It's all diamonds, like in a chain-link fence. Be prepared for many northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest routes.

Tamarac Square has a movie theater that shows great indeie films. A trip to the Denver Film Society and its Starz Film Center is worth your time, too. It was the only theater showing "City of God" for three-hundred miles when it came out.

There are two Tattered Cover bookstores in Denver - one downtown and one across the street from the Cherry Creek Mall. The former is where the big-ticket authors speak and the latter has a better selection and bargain bin.

Casa Bonita. Go on a Monday night, avoid the weekends. Get the all-you-can-eat and stick with the cheese enchiladas. Watching the South Park episode beforehand is optional.

Speaking of Casa Bonita, Go after dark and close to Christgastime - going westbound on Colfax, keep your eyes open for the residential zones on the south side of the street (your left). You'll see the MOST GAUDY CHRISTMAS DISPLAY OF ALL TIME. Revel in it. Believe in something. Then, drive past it during the day and look at it. You'll never want to live another day.

There's a writer's conference in Denver held by the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers called the The Colorado Gold Conference. Sessions are decent, there are plenty of regional authors to meet, and you can pitch your novel / stories to actual agents and editors. I liked it quite a bit. See if you can't run into Debra Nixon - she'll change the way you think about character motivation in story.

The cheapest way to park downtown is to go to the underground parking ramp below the Rock Bottom Brewery, have an on-special beer, and ask for a parking token from your server. The parking entrance is on Curtis just northeast of the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall.

Enjoy, bro!

Tell Emily congrats! If you go to Denver then I'd visit. Mississippi? Not so much...

I'll comment on Nate's comment--call it metacommenting.

Fort Collins-yay! Boulder-boo!

Casa Bonita blows if you actually want Mexican food. If you want to see a guy dive off a cliff into a pool of water in the middle of a restaurant, that's your place.

Get to know the Tattered Cover well. One of the coolest bookstores ever. Last I knew, there were actually three. Check them out on the interwebs.

Rockies games. Do it.

That's great news. Congrats to Emily from the Flynns.

Casa Bonita is a must-see, but truly awful food.

The Cherry Creek Tattered Cover moved to Colfax.

I'll put together a detailed guide to fun, food, and booze in Denver for you.

John Denver was born John Deutschendorf Jr. His nom de plume is kind of misleading. He spent much more time in Aspen than Denver.

Boulder ain't so bad, but it is too expensive, and Ft Collins is much more laid back.

Would have been nice to hear about it instead of reading it on a blog but it is the 21st century.
